Chile's spacious new US$9m Valparaíso Passenger Terminal opened in late October, in time for the start of the Southern Cone cruise season.

The facility stretches over 5,326 square meters and can simultaneously handle two ships carrying 3,000 passengers each. There is ample room for motorcoaches, passenger check-in, security screening, luggage lay-down and immigrations and customs.

Passenger services include a tourist information kiosk, currency exchange, snack bar and shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts and other local products like Chilean wines.

All signage is in Spanish and English.

The terminal is scheduled to be officially inaugurated in late November by Chilean President Michele Bachelet.

Valparaíso projects 40 calls and just over 110,000 passengers during the current October to April season.

The 2015/16 season was the best for Chile as a whole in seven years, highlighted by the return of Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Sun. Valparaíso led in passenger count, with 86,179, so the current season should well surpass that.
