STX France targets expedition cruising with new ship design

STX France
Ulysseas, a new concept design for exploration cruising
A new expedition cruise vessel concept designed by STX France’s R&D department ‘presents an innovative ship for a new kind of cruising’.

With a project name of Ulysseas, the vessel is 145mtr long and 18mtr wide, able to carry 200 passengers and access remote areas of the world, both polar and tropical.

STX France’s teams based in St Nazaire focused on defining a vessel widely turned outwards for passengers to have maximum viewing opportunities.

Cabins and public spaces including restaurants, bars, the spa and an observation lounge sport large, glazed full-height windows.

Wide open decks also encourage connection with the environment.

Four types of cabins are featured, each with an integrated balcony and sea-facing loungers. Some have a Jacuzzi.

The spa and solarium has a retractable roof.

The vessel features four 25 passenger Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) for exploring. An inside embarkation area allows passengers to board the RIBs that are then launched via an aft ramp. Also on board are a helicopter for tours and an aft marina for water sports when sailing in warm waters.

Ulysseas incorporates STX France’s Ecorizon concept to reduce the environmental footprint focusing on zero discharge at sea, maximum energy optimization and low emissions.

‘STX France’s teams have developed an original, environmentally-friendly and sophisticated cruise ship for exploration in comfort, while ensuring a high safety level and I’m confident that the technological bricks presented in the Ulysseas concept will arouse the interest of the cruise sector,’ commented Laurent Castaing, md STX France during Cruise Shipping Miami, when the concept was first shown.
