An exclusive look inside Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.'s cutting-edge Innovation Lab, led by EVP maritime Harri Kulovaara and his team, along with a profile of Tom Wolber—the first interview he's given as president and CEO of Crystal Cruises—are among the highlights of Seatrade Cruise Review's December digital issue, just out.

As the cover story details, RCL's Innovation Lab is transforming how the company works. It encourages collaboration, brings together the best design tools and provides space for mock-ups and reference materials.

‘This is a greenhouse. The space has the right atmosphere for creative work and is a foundation for growth,’ Kulovaara says. ‘It’s something we thought would make us different. But it has been more transformational than we ever imagined.’

The story features images by noted maritime photographer Michel Verdure.

The Wolber profile tells how this longtime senior Disney executive is now leading Crystal's unprecedented brand expansion.

‘I thought the people at Disney were the absolute brand ambassadors,’ Wolber says. ‘The passion at Crystal for delivering the product is just as strong as at Disney, and that surprised me.’

Wolber's leadership will see Crystal through more river vessels in 2018, the first Endeavor-class expedition ship in 2019 and finalizing the design for the Diamond-class (formerly Exclusive-class) ocean-going newbuilds, which are going to be somewhat different than originally announced.

Other highlights of the December issue include Seatrade's Top 20 online news stories of 2017, and details about the unprecedented $55bn orderbook, with nearly 90 firmly contracted newbuilds.

Plus, Asia cruise trends are analyzed by market expert Ted Blamey, principal, CHART Management Consultants, part of a comprehensive Asia Pacific report including a feature on designing cruise ships for China.

Further in-depth reports look at the Caribbean, Québec's St. Lawrence, Australia/New Zealand, Mediterranean and Baltic ports, and Seatrade Europe highlights from Hamburg. Readers can also discover a dozen novel things about the brand-new MSC Seaside, hear views on Virgin Voyages' adults-only concept, and delve into the latest river cruise trends, an assessment of environmental innovations and key refurbishment projects.
