The Ports Authority of Tonga announced it has joined Cruise New Zealand at this week’s annual conference in Wellington which had the theme ‘Growing the Value of Cruise.’

Pictured, from left, is the delegation from Tonga: port master Capt. Hakaumotu Fakapelea; chairman of the port’s board of directors, Stephen Edwards; human resources manager Mele Lavemaau and board director Tomifa Paea.

Lavemaau, who led a delegation to last year’s inaugural South Pacific Cruise Forum in Papeete, said Tonga understands ‘the value of cruise’ and wants to increase cruise ship visits which are expected to reach 17 this year.

Vuna Wharf, the international cruise ship berth in Nuku’alofa opened in 2012, allows cruise ships up to 270mtrs in length to moor at the end of the capital’s main street.
