S.Res 486 was introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, and co-sponsored by Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana; Bill Nelson, a Democrat from Florida; and Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska.
The resolution coincides with Cruise Lines International Association's Plan a Cruise Month in October, when travel agents, cruise lines and industry partners shift into high gear promoting cruises. CLIA said its Plan a Cruise Month activities last year resulted in 250 broadcast segments and more than 83m social media impressions.
The association claims 20,000 global travel agency members and 30,000 individual travel agent members in the US.
CLIA president and ceo Cindy D'Aoust thanked Sen. Rubio and his colleagues for 'recognizing the important contributions of travel agents and cruising to the US economy.
'More than half of all cruisers embark from US ports,' D'Aoust added, 'and whether sailing from North America or the hundreds of other cruise ports around the world, 70% of cruise travelers book through a travel agent because they recognize the value that an experienced travel professional offers in finding the right cruise to fit travelers’ interests and budgets.'
