The Port of Ventspils located on the west coast of Latvia is promoting itself as a new destination for international Baltic cruise itineraries.

The port, which so far has mainly handling general cargo, ro-ro, container feeder vessels and ferry passengers, has identified cruise activity opening up new future opportunities.

The NNVT Noord Natie Ventspils Terminal, built in 2000, added a passenger terminal in 2009 and can accommodate vessels of up to 240mtr in length and a draft of up to 14.2mtr. It is located one mile from the open sea.

The all-year round ice free port has been a gateway to Russia and offers an extensive range of excursions to the old town, blue flag beaches and unspoiled nature reserves.

Very close to the terminal, within walking distance, the old city is the location for many festivals such as jazz, folklore, music and poetry, sports such as volleyball and ice hockey and odd events like Latvian porridge day, comments Lutz Ehrhardt, European representative for the Free Port of Ventspils.

A visit to Latvian’s capital Riga is two hours away.

The terminal’s infrastructure is well prepared for the handling cruise ships and meets international security standards.

Annually some 100,000 passengers arrive or leave via the terminal on Stena Line’s ferry service to Nynäsham/Stockholm.
