Dr. Charles Doherty leads a round table discussion
Viking Cruises' new Resident Historian program provides an enhanced level of enrichment for passengers on its ocean ships. A specially selected faculty will present a high-level historical and cultural education specific to the journey so travelers can understand the major chapters in world history.

They will also conduct seminar-style round tables—smaller, more intimate forums for discussion where the Viking Resident Historian will address in-depth subjects related to their area of specialization and/or particular areas of interest to passengers.

'Our guests are explorers—they are curious travelers who want to learn,' said Karine Hagen, svp Viking Cruises, who leads the company's enrichment efforts.

The Resident Historians will provide a history course as a refresher, which is then supplemented by on-board guest lecturers who contribute their particular expertise—such as art, architecture or music—of the region.

The Resident Historians will deliver iconic lectures such as 'The Roman Empire,' 'The Ottoman Empire,' 'The Hanseatic League' and 'Imperial Russia.' Examples of round table discussions include 'The Elgin Marbles,' 'Women Explorers' and 'Venetian Naval Power.'

Plus, they'll host history-themed dinner discussions, hold daily 'office hours' for one-to-one time with passengers and be available for questions and interactions throughout the cruise.

The Resident Historian lectures are exclusively produced by Viking, under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Doherty, chief Viking Resident Historian. They follow a standardized core curriculum to guarantee consistency throughout the fleet.

The series will be presented in The Theater and filmed to air on the in-room entertainment system. Additionally, the series is currently being professionally filmed in studio, and in early 2018 will be available in its entirety on demand through the in-room entertainment system on all Viking river and ocean ships.

Doherty has lectured in more than 60 countries for The National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History. He received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and attended the Courtauld Institute in London as a Fulbright Scholar.

The first three Resident Historians to be featured on board this spring during 'Empires of the Mediterranean' sailings are Dr. Mark Callaghan, a specialist in 20th century European art and culture (Viking Sky), Lt. Col. Tony Coutts-Britton, an expert in the social and political aspects of European military history (Viking Sea), and Dr. Fenella Bazin, an authority on the Vikings and modern Norway (Viking Star).
