The idea is based on their already proven land-based modular Neapo house design. The modules are to be produced in series in a separate factory, using steel sandwich panels.
At the yard, they are stacked together and form the entire cabin area of the ship, up to some 10 decks high. Only the staircase towers with elevators, air conditioning and other vertical trunks are fabricated at the yard.
The system, called Fixcel, is now being developed in more detail.
The structure is to be self-supporting and does not participate in the ship's global strength.
In an ongoing project with STX Finland, Shippax aims to create a common prototype and develop a ship design that suits this way of building, according to Jukka Laiterä, Shippax sales director.
Shippax has the approvals for land-based applications and has just started to talk with the classification societies and marine authorities, Laiterä said.
