The Detroit-Wayne County Port Authority welcomed American Queen Voyages to its upcoming maritime jobs fair on Aug. 30.

The line is seeking talent for its four paddlewheelers that operate nine- to 23-day voyages primarily on the heartland’s Mississippi and Ohio rivers and the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest.

'We are excited to have American Queen Voyages join us for this first of its kind event in Detroit,' said Mark Schrupp, director of the port authority. 'Detroit has the largest seaport in the state and the city has a deep history of Great Lakes tourism and commerce.'

Recruiting for roles from deckhands to chefs, pilots to pursers

American Queen Voyages will be recruiting for shipboard and operations positions ranging from deckhands and pilots to chefs and servers, pursers and housekeepers for its American Queen, American Empress, American Duchess and American Countess. The company’s coastal vessels Ocean Voyager and Ocean Navigator are also familiar to Detroit as they visit the city throughout the summer on 16-day sailings between Chicago and Toronto.

AQV also operates expedition ship Ocean Victory in Alaska, bookended by cruises calling California, Mexico and Costa Rica.

'This season the Detroit tourism community has warmly embraced our guests and crew exploring the Great Lakes with gracious hospitality,' said Angela Jackson, fleet human resources director, AQV. 'The American Queen Voyages team looks forward to continuing to connect with the city and meet potential crewmates for our riverboats from the city’s rich talent pool.'

Community partnerships

The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority has partnered with two community groups to get people employed in the Great Lakes tourism, travel and international shipping industry. The authority, along with Mariners Inn, a homeless shelter for men in recovery, and Teach Empower Achieve, a community group focused on helping women, have come together to match Detroiters with well-paying jobs on land and sea.

Follows Pittsburgh event

Recently American Queen Voyages highlighted riverboat opportunities during an American Queen call at Pittsburgh, where student athletes met crew and used social media clout to shine a light on hospitality and marine operations jobs.
