Captain Aseem Hashmi, who swore allegiance to the king as master of Queen Mary 2 on September 10 at London’s St. James's Palace, was joined on the top deck of the ship by some of its company, including his senior officers, Cunard bellhops, chefs, housekeepers and White Star servers. Together, they formed the insignia as a special tribute on behalf of Cunard to the king who is now Lord High Admiral of the UK Royal Navy & Merchant Navy.
The vessel was docked at its homeport of Southampton at the start of its ‘Coronation Celebration’ voyage at the time.
Historic connections with the royal family
‘It was an absolute privilege to pay a special Cunard tribute for the coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort,’ said the captain of the tribute on May 2. ‘Our company shares a unique bond with the royal family, and it was only right that we joined the nation in celebrating this historic occasion.’
Cunard has historic connections with the royal family and all three Cunard Queens will be broadcasting the coronation ceremony live from Westminster Abbey today. Later, street parties will be held in the Grand Lobbies to themed musical performances, films and quizzes.
