The equipment will help to ensure the vessels meet rigorous environmental standards
Thirty-two Carnival Corp, & plc vessels are to be fitted with Wärtsilä’s advanced wastewater and dry waste treatment systems, to ensure compliance with the company's own environmental standards and those globally.

The agreement to supply the equipment was signed in October last year, with Carnival Corp. taking delivery/installation works progressing through to 2025.

‘The environmental legislation barrier for the cruise industry is set very high, so we seek the latest technologies to ensure compliance,’ said Carnival Corp. SVP Global Strategic Sourcing Jon McKeown. ‘The Wärtsilä solution selected for the framework more than meets this standard.’

Wärtsilä’s Membrane Bioreactor wastewater treatment plants handle black and grey waste water; Wärtsilä alleges that the system surpasses standards set by the International Maritime Organization for sewage discharge, including paragraph 4.2 of MEPC 227 (64), which applies to special areas.

Similarly, Wärtsilä’s dry waste handling systems, designed to minimise greenhouse gas emissions, are said to comply with IMO MARPOL requirements.

Offered Arto Lehtinen, director water and waste, Wärtsilä, ‘There is increased awareness within the cruise industry of environmental sustainability and Wärtsilä is proud and ready to support this focus… We continue to work with Carnival to enhance their goals for waste reduction.’
