CLIA Brazil had previously announced a suspension of operations until Jan. 21

This particularly impacts the peak-season cabotage cruising programs of MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises.

The decision came after a meeting with authorities at the federal, state and municipal levels, in which 'various points of view' were presented. CLIA Brazil said more time is needed to continue the discussions and assess the necessary measures to guarantee a resumption.

Contrasts with positive US developments

CLIA Brazil noted the voluntary suspension in Brazil contrasts with 'positive developments in the United States, where health authorities recognized the effectiveness of the cruise industry’s protocols and announced the lifting of the conditional sailing order, which has helped to guide the industry’s return to operations in North America.'

The CSO expires Jan. 15 and will transition to a voluntary program.

Vaccination and testing

According to CLIA Brazil, cruising is the only travel segment that requires 'exceedingly high' levels of vaccination and 100% testing of every individual.

Brazil's protocols require all passengers to be fully vaccinated, present negative tests before boarding, continuous testing on board, use of masks, social distancing and reduce occupancy, among other actions.

When cases are identified, cruise ship protocols help to maximize onboard containment with rapid response procedures designed to safeguard passengers and crew as well as the communities visited, the association added.

Further, CLIA Brazil stated cruising is the only sector that continuously monitors, collects and reports case information directly to the authorities.
