Part of SMM Hamburg (February 2-5) the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (gmec), organised in cooperation with Seatrade Maritime, sees experts across the cruise, ferry and maritime industries exchange ideas on ways to tackle the growing climate change crisis.

Alternative fuels

‘Towards 2050 and beyond: the search for alternative fuels’ will address regulatory challenges, IMO requirements and engine performance management, with panellists including Wolfram Guntermann, director, environmental fleet management, Hapag-Lloyd AG; Heidi Paulsrud, director, sales & marketing, exhaust gas cleaning, Wärtsilä Moss AS; Rasmus Stute, regional bdm Germany, DNV GL; Kjeld Aabo, director new technologies, sales and promotion, Two-stroke Marine, MAN Energy Solutions and Craig Eason, editorial director, Fathom World and former deputy editor, Lloyd’s List.

Zero carbon future

Among those exploring a zero carbon future are Hansjörg Kunze, vp communication & sustainability, AIDA Cruises; Dirk Bergmann, cto, Turbocharging, ABB Turbo Systems and chairman, CIMAC GHG Strategy Group and Georgios Plevrakis, director, global sustainability, ABS.

NGOs will also come together with industry leaders to find ways of going green on a level playing field.
