P&O’s Pacific Partnership, partly funded by a $A1 donation from passengers, worked with the Conflict Islands Conservation Initiative in the project.

The release of the hatchlings, which took place over a four-month period from last November until February, will help monitor turtle populations and develop a long-term tagging and nesting programme.

P&O Cruises Australia President Sture Myrmell said the Conflict Islands are one of the most popular destinations on the company’s Papua New Guinea itineraries.

‘Our guests know the Conflict Islands are a jewel of the marine environment and many visit the turtle sanctuary during their visits,’ Myrmell said.

Making a difference

‘Through their contribution to the P&O Pacific Partnership our guests know they are making a difference in the protection of endangered marine life.

‘We are looking forward to our ships returning to the Conflict Islands, but it is good to know that this important project is continuing in the meantime.’
