Seatrade health, safety sessions hone in on cruise recovery, sustainability

A couple standout sessions at Seatrade Cruise Global's Health & Safety Theater hone in on cruise industry and government partnerships for recovery and ship safety/sustainability, both with powerhouse speakers.

'The Great Recovery - Cruise Industry and Government Partnerships Power a Resilient 2022' will address topics like financial impacts of the pandemic, US federal agency support for travel/cruise recovery; safety, security and passenger experience improvements resulting from government/cruise industry partnerships; and increased efficiency through data sharing.

Further topics in the session include successes in managing COVID-19 outbreaks, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's voluntary COVID mitigation program for cruise ships and the transition to endemic disease management, plus the outlook for full recovery of cruise operations.

Speakers include Louis Sola, commissioner, US Federal Maritime Commission; Pete Flores, executive assistant commissioner, Office of Field Operations, US Customs and Border Protection; Bud Darr, EVP maritime policy and government affairs, MSC Cruises; Zachary Swartz, senior advisor, US Department of Commerce; and Capt. Aimee Treffiletti, CDC.

The session, set for 1 p.m. April 26, will be moderated by Donnie Brown, VP maritime policy, Cruise Lines International Association.

'The Cruise Ship Safety Forum - Industry Leaders Working Together for a Safe and Sustainable Future'          

The Cruise Ship Safety Forum is a consortium of cruise ship operators, shipyards, classification societies and CLIA, which have come together to advance cruise ship safety and sustainability in a coordinated and focused manner.

This session will discuss the Forum's work and the way forward with respect to sustainability in cruising.

Speakers include Paal Johansen, SVP and global cruise ship director, DNV Maritime; Tom Strang, SVP maritime affairs, Carnival Corp. &  plc; and Stephane Cordier, VP projects and performance, Chantiers de l’Atlantique.

The panel, scheduled for 3:45 p.m. April 27, will be moderated by MSC's Bud Darr.
