Stavanger goes greener
Norway's Port of Stavanger has introduced an environmental discount on port fees from 2015. The discount applies to ships registered in the ESI (Environmental Ship Index).
Ships with a total ESI score from 25 to 50 points can obtain call fee reductions of 30%. Ships with a total score of 50 points or more will qualify for a 50% reduction, informs Anders Bang-Andersen, director of cruise development at Stavanger City and Port.
The new discounts above can be combined and calculated separately on the basis of regulations. Overall, the total discount on the Stavanger port fees cannot exceed 60%.
‘We know the cruise lines are making a lot of effort to reduce their environmental footprint and this reduction is a way of rewarding shipowners for their efforts, remarked Bang-Andersen.
‘I am sure that little by little more and more cruise ships will appear on the ESI,’ he added.
The discount offered by Stavanger comes at the same time as the Norwegian Costal Administration introduced similar environmental, ESI-based discounts on its fees.
