As well as an environmental warrior, Auffret – who died a plane crash in 2019 – was a polar guide, expedition leader, Antarctic base leader and environmental agent at the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators. Since she was a leader in the expedition cruise industry’s efforts to combat marine plastic pollution, clean-ups now take place worldwide annually in her memory June 11-19, also coinciding with her birthday on June 16.

Andrew Turner, AE Expeditions’ sales director EMEA, said of the Clean-Up for Sarah, an AECO and International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators initiative, ‘We’re very proud to participate in this initiative to honour Sarah’s incredible work and advocacy for protecting the world’s marine environments. These clean-ups remove thousands of kilograms of rubbish from local environments every year, and we look forward to spending the morning with our agent partners contributing to our local communities in a meaningful way.’

The clean-ups take place along the Wales Coastal Path in Chester, Pyrford Lock in Woking and Winterton Beach in Norfolk. AE Expeditions and Explore Worldwide encourage agents unable to attend to participate in their local areas.
