'We are beyond thrilled to announce our newest ship, Sylvia Earle, is in the water and on her way to Antarctica,’ CEO Michael Heath said.

‘We cannot wait to introduce her to our loyal trade and consumer partners worldwide and, of course, a new generation of global expeditioners in search of adventure, discovery and extraordinary life-changing experiences,’ Heath said.

Like her sister ship Greg Mortimer, launched in 2019, Sylvia Earle was built in China for SunStone Group with an Ulstein X-BOW and carries an average of 132 passengers.

Perfect base camp

She is the perfect base camp for exploring, with multiple restaurants and bars, wellness areas, an outdoor heated swimming pool and jacuzzis, a gym, spa and sauna, library, lecture theatre and expansive decks for viewing the wilderness and wildlife.

There are Zodiac docks, a changing room and mudroom and a dedicated science centre that will be the hub for participative and educational Citizen Science programmes.

Pioneering women

The ship’s namesake has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998 and each deck is named after other pioneering female conservationists.

Earle’s own initiative, Mission Blue, is creating a global network of marine protected areas known as ‘Hope Spots.’

As previously reported, Earle, in partnership with Ocean Geographic, will lead a world-first Antarctic Climate Expedition in February.
