Called ‘The Solar Eclipse Expedition,’ the 13-night cruise onboard Coral Adventurer departs Darwin on April 15, 2023 arriving in Broome April 28, 2023. Limited to 110-passengers, the sailing will be hosted by astronomy experts Fred Watson and Marnie Ogg from the Australian Geographic Society, and accompanied by nature photographer Scott Portelli.

‘We are excited to partner once more with the Australian Geographic Society to deliver this unique expedition experience for our guests,’ said Jeff Gillies, commercial director, Coral Expeditions. ‘Following the success of our collaborations with the Citizen Science of the Great Barrier Reef and the Frontier Lands of Papua New Guinea, we know that this will be a sought-after voyage…’

Following the eclipse, passengers will continue through Kimberley.

Bookings opened to members of Coral Expeditions’ Xplorers Club and the Australian Geographic Society on February 8. Prices start from $13,490 per person.

Itinerary highlights

Passengers will be served canapes and champagne while watching the eclipse.

As part of the itinerary, they will also have the chance to encounter the lagoon on Coral’s Xplorer tenders, see King George River after the wet season, walk amongst ancient Wandjina and Gwion Gwion rock art galleries at Vansittart Bay and Bigge Island, and snorkel and dive in the waters of Scott Reef.

As well as seeing Montgomery Reef, passengers will ride a Zodiac through Horizontal Falls, cruise through Whirlpool Passage and swim at Silica Beach.

Birdwatching and encounters with marine life at Adele Island and Lacepede Island are part of the programme, as well as (weather permitting) snorkelling at Rowley Shoals – a group of three coral atolls with untouched coral gardens, superb water clarity and teeming marine life.

An optional extra helicopter flight over the four-tiered Mitchell Falls is available.

Passengers receive a commemorative photo book featuring images captured by Portelli during the expedition at the conclusion of their sailing.
