Smithsonian Journeys experts joining multiple Ponant sailings in 2023
21 of Ponant’s itineraries next year will be led by two experts from Smithsonian Journeys, such as an art historian, a solar astrophysicist or an international relations expert.
The partnership aims to shed new light on destinations for a more immersive experience for passengers.
Antarctica
Among the sailings is a new 12-day polar expedition cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula taking place February 20-March 3, 2023 onboard Le Lyrial. Smithsonian experts include Michelle Thaller, assistant director for science communication at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Peter Bobrowsky, a geologist and archaeologist with over four decades’ experience of fieldwork in locations across the globe, including the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Machu Picchu and Petra.
The voyage begins in Argentina with an overnight in Buenos Aires before a charter flight brings passengers to Ushuaia. From there, the ship will cross Drake Passage where sightings of albatrosses and cape petrels will be accompanied by lectures on the continent’s history and wildlife.
For five days, weather conditions permitting, passengers will embark on zodiac outings and landings to explore Antarctica — from ice floes, tabletop icebergs, mountain peaks, volcanic beaches and icy bays. Travelers will also visit research stations and former whaling stations before returning to Ushuaia.
Prices start at $13,270 per person.
