Harland & Wolff issued a notice of intent to file for the administration of its companies.

This includes Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Appledore, Arnish and Methil.

The decision was taken by H&W directors after a lengthy sales process with assistance from leading advisers, who determined survival of the companies no longer viable.

According to a statement on the H&W website, the directors concluded the best remaining outcome is to pursue a survival of the business under new ownership.

Spanish shipbuilding subsidiary Navantia UK came to the rescue of the struggling shipyard in a deal late last year to secure the future of the company’s UK shipyards and save numerous jobs.

H&W stated progress was made following this announcement by the UK secretary of state for business and trade in late 2024.

Sale process

The companies are now subject to a sale process, expected to complete in the coming weeks. This will see the purchaser acquiring the majority of assets of the core H&W businesses.

The proposed administrators are insolvency practitioners from Teneo.
