The Massachusetts Port Authority joined local elected officials and members of the South Boston community to celebrate the economic impact cruising has throughout Massachusetts.
There was also a special dedication of a new pocket park to honor the late William J. 'Hank' 'Skippy' Miller, a longshoreman and past president of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 800.
Round-trip Cuba cruises
Holland America Line's Veendam will be offering two 14-day round-trip Cuba sailings, departing June 23 and Aug. 4. Norwegian Cruise Line will operate a 14-day round-trip eastern Caribbean voyage Oct. 26 aboard Norwegian Dawn. Royal Caribbean International will add a trio of weeklong round-trip Bermuda sailings, Sept. 23, Oct. 7 and Oct. 21 aboard Serenade of the Seas.
Massport will also continue to offer weekly escapes to Bermuda and fall foliage sailings to Canada/New England.
'The Ray Flynn Cruiseport is extremely important to the city of Boston and to our region,' Congressman Stephen F. Lynch said, citing hundreds of local jobs and tens of millions of dollars for the local economy.
Some 400,000 cruisers projected
Flynn Cruiseport Boston handled a record 388,222 visitors during the 2017 cruise season and approximately 400,000 are expected in 2018. Cruise calls will stretch through November, with 150 visits from 35 ships of 19 lines.
Overnight port calls are among current cruise trends. Last year, seven ships overnighted at the Boston terminal.
'The Port of Boston is a popular cruise destination enticing visitors from around the world with extensive history, culture, shopping and world class culinary experiences,' Massport port director Lisa Wieland said. 'Looking ahead to the future, Boston will continue to grow as both an embarkation port and destination port of call for multiple cruise lines as we improve our infrastructure and expand our itineraries.'
