Royal Caribbean uses MFace to speed disembarkation

Royal Caribbean is working with IDEMIA to speed its debarkation process using IDEMIA's MFace high-speed, 3-D face capture technology. Successful trials have gone underway at Cape Liberty, New Jersey, and PortMiami, where it will go into production.

The technology is key to enhancing the passenger experience by significantly speeding the verification method.

Matching with CBP Traveler Verification Service

MFace compares the facial identities of passengers disembarking with the identities of ticketed passengers who boarded the ship at the start of a cruise, matching against images in the US Customs and Border Protection's Traveler Verification Service. No images are stored after the trip is completed to ensure that passenger privacy is maintained.

‘Facial biometric technology is transforming how we travel by enabling a trusted identity verification," said Donnie Scott, SVP public security for North America at IDEMIA. ‘The solution we deployed in collaboration with CBP and Royal Caribbean demonstrates how facial recognition can simultaneously improve the customer experience and strengthen the US entry/exit processes.’

Wider deployment in Florida

Additional deployments in other Florida ports are anticipated later in 2019.

‘We have focused on improving the guests' total experience, including the final step of clearing Customs in a fast, secure, frictionless process,’ said Capt. Thomas Hinderhofer, Royal Caribbean's director of Cape Liberty Cruise Port and PortMiami Terminal A.

‘We received very positive guest feedback on the facial biometric technology systems as it allows passengers to swiftly pass through the CBP inspection process.’

Biometrics and video analytic technologies are set to significantly change the cruise experience, according to security experts both within and outside the industry.
