AECO appoints new marine operations agent

The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators appointed Brede Valanes as its new marine operations agent. He is a certified master mariner with experience in the coast guard, fisheries, oil and gas industry, as well as tourism.

Marine, technical and regulatory affairs

Valanes will deal with maritime, technical and regulatory affairs. He also will be involved in tasks, projects and partnerships related to operational tools and overviews, search and rescue, hydrography, meteorology/ice and communication, among others.

In addition to his seafaring experience, Valanes has worked on maritime regulatory issues and implementation and safety management systems. He has been involved with accident prevention and contingency planning and conducted audits and ship inspections. He has experience in regulatory processes affecting the maritime industries through forums such as the Norwegian Ship Owners Association.

Worked for Hurtigruten

Valanes has worked as health, safety, environment & quality coordinator for AECO member Hurtigruten, where he was involved in the development and maintenance of a safety management system for vessels and land-based activities. Plus, he has coordinated Polar Code implementation for expedition cruise vessels and contributed to newbuild projects.

Valanes, a Norwegian, was selected from a pool of 38 applicants. He will be based in Tromsø.
