The development was announced by the German operator during the ship's maiden call at the Catalonian capital on Wednesday.
‘Before the summer is out, the company - working with the relevant authorities and other partners - intends to supply AIDAperla with low-emission liquefied natural gas(LNG) while she is docked in the port,’ said AIDA.
AIDA also stated it was discussing the supply of LNG with other Mediterranean ports as well.
AIDA also outlined its commitment to strengthen ties with Barcelona, particularly with regard to the upcoming 'Helios Class' newbuildings tailored for LNG operation both in port and at sea.
This year, 61 AIDA calls are scheduled at the port, including 31 from AIDAperla.
AIDA said it will step up this commitment further in 2018: ‘Thanks to the completion of the Carnival Group’s new cruise terminal, for the first time six ships from the AIDA fleet will be stopping at Barcelona on Med cruises,’ it confirmed.
In Western Europe, AIDAprima is already receiving LNG supplies alongside in all her five ports of call.
AIDAperla is currently undertaking a number of showcase calls in the West Med prior to her official naming and start of regular operation in Palma de Mallorca on June 30.
Palma will, along with Barcelona, act as base and turnaround port for AIDAperla's seven-day West Med itineraries.
