The No. Three berth at Pingtan port area will be remodelled into a dedicated cruise handling facility.
Multipurpose berth transformed for cruise ships
The 50,000gt multipurpose berth, was formerly designed and constructed for 100,000 tons-class container ships. Approved by the Ministry of Transport, the berth will be reformed to a cruise facility capable of handling up to 150,000gt ships.
Based on the first phase development, Pingtan will also start cruise facilities construction at a total investment of RMB3bn, covering nearby Dalian island and Jiangshan island.
China's largest island
Pingtan is off the east coast of Fujian province, China. It is the largest island in Fujian and the sixth largest island in China. Pingtan is the closest island from the mainland to Taiwan.
‘Close to Taiwan, Pingtan is located on the northeast and southeast Asia shipping routes and we could develop more Mainland-Taiwan and international routes in the coming years,’ said an official of Pingtan local authority.
Currently, China has one international tourism island of Hainan where cruise ships call in the southern port of Sanya. Pingtan is the second one approved by central government.
