Costa Luminosa rescued the 11-member crew of a fish carrier on fire off the Aegean Sea.

Around midnight yesterday, the Costa Cruises ship was sailing south of the Peloponnese toward the port of Katakolon when the captain received a request from the Hellenic Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Piraeus to aid the distressed fish carrier Kilic 1.

Dense smoke, adverse sea and weather conditions

Under the command of Capt. Pietro Sinisi, Costa Luminosa deviated from its route to reach the vessel. Despite the dense smoke coming from the fish carrier and adverse sea and weather conditions, with wind at 30 knots and two-meter waves, rescue operations were successful.

Kilic 1's 11 crew were taken from the ship's bow by a Costa Luminosa tender, then transferred to a cargo ship. All are in good condition.

Costa Luminosa then resumed course toward Katakolon, one of the ports on a weeklong cruise to Greece, Croatia and Montenegro. Departures of this itinerary will operate from Venice and Bari until the end of the year.
