Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line adjusted port calls for a combined three ships to avoid Tropical Storm Dorian, and the US Coast Guard has ports in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands preparing for sustained gale force winds.

On Tuesday, Dorian's maximum sustained winds remained near 50 mph/85 km/h with higher gusts. The National Hurricane Center in Miami expects slow strengthening during the next 48 hours, and said Dorian is forecast to be near hurricane strength when it moves close to Puerto Rico and eastern Hispaniola.

Hurricane watch for Puerto Rico, eastern Dominican Republic

A hurricane watch is in effect for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic from Isla Saona to Samaná.

'The threat of winds and heavy rains later this week into this weekend in the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas and Florida is increasing,' the National Hurricane Center said, advising residents to monitor the storm's progress.

Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Breeze tweaks

Carnival Sunrise, which embarks today in New York, adjusted the order of port calls on its itinerary. The ship is now going to stop at San Juan on Friday, instead of Grand Turk, and at Amber Cove on Saturday, instead of San Juan. Carnival Sunrise will visit Grand Turk Sunday, instead of Amber Cove.

The current Carnival Breeze cruise, which embarked at Port Canaveral on Saturday, is dropping Wednesday's scheduled call at San Juan. Instead, the ship will remain at sea.

Disney Fantasy

Disney Fantasy, meanwhile, is substituting calls at Tortola and St. Thomas today and tomorrow with Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

So far, Norwegian Cruise Line itineraries remain unchanged.
