Fincantieri and Mapei, a leader in chemical products for the construction sector with a business line of shipbuilding industry products, signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the area of research and innovation.

Fincantieri said the partnership will help it optimize installation times, reduce the weight of certain materials, improve acoustic insulation and develop and extend the use of adhesives products in some shipbuilding applications. Moreover, Mapei aims to carry out projects to find new solutions in its field.

The joint research issues will mainly concern the development of innovative products including adhesives, underfloor structures, surface materials (technical and finishing), grouts, supporting wall panels, detergents to clean furnished areas, materials and protection systems for furnished areas, and thermal, acoustic and mechanical insulation.

In the start-up phase, the activities will focus on materials and resins for innovative and high quality finishes, for waterproofing wet areas and on textiles having high sound-absorption characteristics.

Furthermore, the agreement will encourage joint and collaborative training activities to improve products and processes.

CEO Giuseppe Bono said Fincantieri needs partners that share its commitment to innovation and help the world's leading cruise shipbuilder develop new ideas and projects in specific fields. He likened Fincantieri to a 'big lab.' adding: 'We nurture the spirit of research needed to meet the demands of our clients, always asking for a high level of excellence.'

For Giorgio Squinzi, md of Mapei S.p.A. and ceo of Mapei Group, the cooperation will help improve its marine product line and increase its offer of high performing products formulated to meet the needs of the shipbuilding industry.
