Costa Concordia’s captain was freed from house arrest by an Italian judge on Thursday but remains in detention, Reuters and the Associated Press report from Rome.

Francesco Schettino was ordered not to leave his hometown, Meta di Sorrento, near Naples, while the criminal investigation continues.

Schettino faces multiple charges in connection with Concordia’s wreck off the island of Giglio on Jan. 13, when as many as 32 passengers and crew members died.

Magistrates handling the case said Schettino would remain under adequate supervision by authorities, Reuters reports.
