Small is Beautiful - Does Size Matter? Catering for Smaller Ships in Ports and Destinations
Sustainable tourism and how ships and ports should adapt for a greener future will be the focus of a 'Greener Cruising' hour, sponsored by gmec the first afternoon of Seatrade Europe in Hamburg.

Regulatory update

Moderated by Esther Mallach, partner, Arnecke Sibeth Dabelstein, the first of two sessions during the hour will host Ukko Metsola, VP government relations, Europe & Asia-Pacific, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., to outline the regulatory update in Europe and provide an implementation of specific requirements for ports and ships.

This will be followed by an interactive focus on ports and ships’ commitment to achieve sustainability and the working practices of each stakeholder.

Case studies

Practical case studies will be shared and followed by a discussion on challenges that need to be addressed.

Besides Metsola, speakers include Claus Bødker, director, Cruise Baltic; Michele Francioni, SVP cost efficiency & process improvement, MSC Cruises; Arantxa Garcia, head of sustainable development, TUI Destination Experiences; Hansjörg Kunze, VP communication & sustainability, AIDA Cruises; Kathleen Pessolano, director, strategic partnerships, Global Sustainable Tourism Council, and Sacha Rougier, MD, Cruise Gate Hamburg.

The two sessions are key for cruise lines and ports to address the issue of sustainable tourism and ensure they meet legislative requirements for greener cruising targets, especially with the cruise industry commitment to cut 40% carbon emissions by 2030.

'Greener Cruising' is set for 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., September 11.

Details on the Seatrade Europe conference programme are here. The event takes place from September 11-13 at Hamburg Messe.
