Construction of a new 330,000sq mtr port area, featuring a 500mtr long berth, will be completed in February 2019
Denmark's Port of Kalundborg is making a significant investment in expanded port infrastructure to attract homeporting for large cruise ships as well as partnering with two experienced service providers to target more business.

The construction of a new 330,000sq mtr port area will be completed in February 2019.

25,000sq mtr is set aside for dedicated handling of cruise operations with a quay spanning 500 mtr long and water depth of 15mtr the Port of Kalundborg will be able to accept any size ship plus next generation vessels, it says.

At the same time Kalundborg has entered into a partnership with Blue Water Shipping and PWL Port Services to introduce the Danish port as the new gateway to the Baltics with facilities for large cruise vessels in a location with easy access to Copenhagen Airport, as well as the city.

‘The Port of Kalundborg has its eyes on the future cruise market. The growth within the cruise industry is immense and the potential for new business huge. We are very excited and proud to announce that we are entering into a cooperation with Blue Water Shipping in Denmark and PWL Port Services in Hamburg, Germany,’ said port director Bent Rasmussen.

‘The partners with their long standing expertise in the industry will be responsible for the terminal operation as well as business acquisition,’ he added.

The sales and marketing team will consist of Hans Chen Braas, Blue Water Shipping, Alexander Napp, PWL and Liselotte Roerup, Port of Kalundborg.

‘We are confident that with this new port area we are offering a unique turnaround opportunity for Baltic cruises and journeys along the Norwegian coast. The location of Kalundborg 8 nautical miles from the T-route in the Great Belt and just 100 km from Copenhagen airport will make Kalundborg a very competitive alternative in the area with regard to revenue for the cruise lines and time and fuel savings when cruising into the Baltic,’ Roerup, cruise and marketing manager, Port of Kalundborg, told Seatrade Cruise News.

PWL’s Napp added, ‘At time of rapid growth in the cruise industry we are not only looking in Germany for new potential destinations and turnaround ports for the industry. When we came across the Port of Kalundborg and its potential once the new deep water pier is in place, it was only a consequent step to join the team with Port of Kalundborg and Blue Water. We encourage all cruise lines to have a close look to this most interesting new opportunity.’

Blue Water Shipping’s manager, port agency & cruise Braas added, We are very excited to be part of the project in Kalundborg. The whole region is becoming increasingly popular and with the huge orderbook ahead, Kalundborg is a great alternative and addition to the existing port structure. Together with the Port of Kalundborg and PWL, we will be able to offer a modern, full-scale turnaround solution, customized to fit each cruise lines' exact needs.’

Kalunborg is exhibiting at Seatrade Europe next week in Hamburg on the Cruise Baltic stand 207.
