New Mein Schiff 2 will be a sister ship to New Mein Schiff 1, which will be delivered by Meyer Turku next spring. The first ship was floated out late September.
TUI Cruises ceo’s Wybcke Meier and Frank Kuhlmann were present at the keel laying and were one of the VIP guests to fix lucky coins under the keel of the ship.
‘It is always great to visit the shipyard and to see the progress with our upcoming ships. With the new Mein Schiff 1 and 2 we will get two great new ships to lead our fleet in the coming years,’ Meier noted.
Meanwhile parts of a new 1,200 tons goliath gantry crane are being put in position for assembly which starts on week commencing October 9, 2017.
The first leg will be lifted in two weeks’ time followed by the second shortly after.
‘It sounds very simple but the crane beam’s own weight is 2,500 tons and the main crane beam will be lifted by the crane legs to a height of over 100mtr in early November,’ informed Meyer Turku’s ceo, Jan Meyer.
When fully erect, the new gantry crane will reach 130mtr height and will be a new visible landmark at Turku shipyard, he added.
