Cruisers from Spain step ashore in Malmö
In a major boost for cruise tourism in southern Sweden, the Swedish Maritime Administration gave Copenhagen Malmö Port the go-ahead to receive larger cruise ships in Malmö.

Vessels carrying a total of more than 10,000 passengers are already booked for the 2018 season.

A constraint has been that the ships were not permitted to exceed a length of 240 meters. During the autumn CMP carried out extensive simulations to test whether it would be safe to operate larger ships, with very positive results.

The Swedish Maritime Administration's authorization to receive ships of up to 300 metres 'creates entirely new conditions for the cruise operation here in Malmö,' said Arnt Møller Pedersen, head of cruise traffic, CMP.

The simulations were conducted over a number of days in Göteborg with different types of ships, which were subject to different weather conditions and wind forces.

A total of 18 dockings were performed with the conditions found in Malmö's Frihamnen. It must be possible to maneuver the ships at a speed of 3 knots and with a side wind of 10 meters per second without tug assistance. However, the wind restriction set for the ships’ maiden visits is 8 meters per second.
