Meyer Werft delivered the first Quantum-Ultra ship, Spectrum of the Seas, to Royal Caribbean International in Bremerhaven. This vessel is customized for the China market.

The 169,000gt ship stretches 347.1 meters/1,139 feet and has 4,246 lower berths, with total capacity for 4,284 passengers plus 1,551 crew.

North Star, enhanced Ultimate Family Suite, karaoke venue

Like Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, Spectrum has a North Star viewing capsule, FlowRider surf simulator and a Rip Cord skydiving simulator. A new feature for the Quantum series is Sky Pad, a virtual reality bungee trampoline experience.

An enhanced Ultimate Family Suite, 20% larger Windjammer Buffet, new specialty restaurant Sichuan Red and karaoke venue Star Moment are further elements. SeaPlex, the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea, offers bumper cars, roller skating, basketball and new augmented reality walls and floors.

Spectrum has two 12V and two 16V Wärtsilä engines for total power of 67,200 kW and propulsion power of 41,000 kW.

Energy-efficient systems

The ship is fitted with the latest emission control systems and a 'hybrid' scrubber. Highly energy-efficient technical systems, optimized hydrodynamics, heat recovery and what the shipyard called 'exceedingly effective' hull coating, together with LED lighting, should provide considerable energy savings. A diesel/electric pod drive, extensive alarm and safety systems, interactive communication systems and the latest stage equipment are other features.

Spectrum of the Seas is registered to the Bahamas and the classification society is DNV GL.

The maiden voyage to Asia is set to embark April 18 in Barcelona. Spectrum will become the largest and most expensive ship in Asia upon arriving at its Shanghai home on June 3.
