Some 300sq mtr of space at the terminal has been converted to create extra capacity for 1,000 bags and an additional 382 parking spaces have been created, alongside a 10mtr by 30mtr marquee to provide an undercover baggage handling facility.
This will expedite the passengers bag drop process, security check and loading onto the vessel. Passengers will then head straight to a dedicated car park — streamlining the embarkation process.
Speaking of the port’s developments, Andy Foster, commercial manager, port services at Port of Tyne said, ‘The new car park and bag drop area is the beginning of a range of improvements to both passenger and vessel facilities at the Port’s International Passenger Terminal.
Foster puts customer service at the top of the agenda: ‘Providing an excellent customer experience is really important to us, and we hope this latest investment will support all cruise operators and passengers in making cruise check-in more efficient and trouble free.’
Marella Cruises’ head of trading and planning, Neil Duncan is pleased with the improvements, ‘This is great news for Marella customers, as it will ensure a seamless end-to-end Port experience, with much more space to manage our embarkation/debarkation Coperation.’
Cruise calls are on the riseThe Port of Tyne’s International Passenger Terminal expects 59 cruise calls this year, including 10 turnaround calls from Marella Cruises — with itineraries to Estonia, Nordic countries and Russia.
The Port of Tyne has continued to experience steady growth in cruise calls over the past couple of years.
