This enables major US distributors in the cruise business and Latin America/Caribbean to transfer large volumes of cargo inland via railroad instead of trucking to Savino Del Bene's facility for warehousing and distribution locally and globally, substantially reducing the transportation cost.
The boxcars run on the Florida East Coast Railway, which connects with other rail systems accessing the Midwest—where many food suppliers are based—and beyond.
'This is another edge, a service we offer that others don't have,' said John Paul Brigneti, VP global logistics cruise & marine solution at Savino Del Bene.
A 60-foot boxcar can carry up to 200,000 pounds or 6,000 cubic feet of cargo. Brigneti put the average cost for this service at 3 cents to 4 cents per ton-mile for a railroad car, compared to 8 cents for regular truck service.
'Shipping via railroad can save a lot of money,' Brigneti said. 'Our goal is always to create innovative solutions in our organization and operation in Miami, combined with our free trade zone and global distribution.'
