Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises will expand its tall ship fleet in summer 2020 with the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit. The vessel will be built at Metalships & Docks SAU in Vigo, Spain.

Sea Cloud Spirit is designed with a similar style and philosophy as Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II, and will be traditionally sailed by hand.

High demand

'Sea Cloud Spirit is arriving at the right time,' said Daniel Schäfer, managing director of Sea Cloud Cruises. 'Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II are enjoying a high demand from both independent travelers and in the charter market. An expansion of the fleet, especially in the Mediterranean, is expected and demanded by many guests.'

Metalships & Docks SAU is known for its expertise in building technically sophisticated ships such as platform supply vessels, and for its high-quality mega- and sailing yachts. Metalships will build Sea Cloud Spirit based on the hull of the former construction project of Sea Cloud Hussar.

Hamburg's Partner Ship Design will create the interiors.

Sea Cloud Spirit will offer plenty of open deck space, a spa/wellness area and elegant decor combined with a classic yacht-style feel. Unusual for a sailing ship, an elevator will connect the five decks.

Balcony cabins

Twenty-five of the 69 outside cabins, including the three owner's suites and 22 junior suites, will have balconies. The spacious wellness area will offer three treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath and a hairdressing salon. The separate fitness area will be located on the sun deck.

Approximately 85 crew will serve on board.

Sail power

The 138-meter/453-foot Sea Cloud Spirit will have roughly 4,000 square meters/43,056 square feet of sails. Main mast height is 57.7 meters/189 feet.

Though sailing is the main focus, the ship will be equipped with two hybrid diesel-electric engines (1,700 kW each).

Sea Cloud Spirit will be flagged to Malta.
