Veendam arrival to kickstart Atlantic Canada's 2016 season
The 2016 cruise season gets underway in Atlantic Canada this weekend with the arrival of Holland America Line's Veendam in Halifax on April 30, Sydney on May 1, and Charlottetown on May 2.

The Atlantic Canada Cruise Association (ACCA) is forecasting approximately 611,000 passengers will visit the region during the 2016 cruise season. This is an increase from 550,651 in 2015.

'The cruise sector in Atlantic Canada continues to be strong,' said Nora Fever, chair of ACCA. 'We are delighted to be welcoming so many passengers during a season that stretches from late April to early November.'

ACCA estimates that direct spending by passengers and crew will be approximately $41m in 2016. When cruise line spending is included, total direct economic impact to the region will be $81.6m

Ports throughout the region are benefiting from the overall growth in numbers with some of the smaller, niche ports including Summerside, PEI welcoming cruise ships for the first time his year.

Disney Cruise Line is returning to Atlantic Canada in 2016 while Norwegian Cruise Lines' Norwegian Breakaway and Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas will make maiden stops.
