International speakers at the New Zealand Cruise Association’s 2018 conference in Blenheim applauded the organisation’s logo—He Waka Eke Noa, Maori for ‘We are all in this together.’

‘It is critically important that we work together,’ the outgoing global president and ceo of Cruise Lines International Association Cindy D’Aoust said.

D’Aoust, who was making her first trip to New Zealand and will attend Cruise360 again in Sydney on August 31, said the memorandum of understanding between the NZCA and CLIA is a great leap forward.

All Blacks as a model

Susan Bonner, Royal Caribbean’s new vp and md Australia and New Zealand, used New Zealand’s champion national rugby union team, the All Blacks, to support the idea of working together.

‘They play as a team, which is why they have been so successful,’ Bonner, standing alongside a giant blowup of the All Blacks doing the traditional war cry, the haka, said.

(Bonner, incidentally, watched the Bledisloe Cup competition between the All Blacks and Australia’s Wallabies in Auckland the following night. The All Blacks won).

Adam Armstrong, who said he had been in the job as Silversea’s md Australia and New Zealand for just two-and-a-half weeks, wants to ‘be in it together’ with the country’s regional ports to present new experiences for passengers.

Reconciling cruise statistics

NZCA ceo Kevin O’Sullivan said there have been discrepancies in the past between the findings of its independent analysts, Market Economics and Stats NZ, New Zealand’s official data agency.

In the spirit of ‘all in it together,’ Stats NZ is working to broaden its assessment of the cruise industry and O’Sullivan said an economic impact report is now due out later this year.

Rene de Monchy, director of trade, public relations and major events for Tourism New Zealand, addressed the critical subject of ‘New Zealand destination marketing versus destination readiness.’
