MSC Cruises’ first selective catalytic reduction system
The ship is equipped with advanced technologies to reduce harmful air emissions and improve overall environmental performance at sea and ashore. Those include a closed-loop exhaust gas cleaning system, and MSC Cruises’ first selective catalytic reduction system to help cut nitrogen oxide by 80%.
All other MSC Cruises ships under construction will feature the SCR technology including MSC Grandiosa’s sister ship, MSC Virtuosa, due to enter service in October 2020, as well as MSC Seashore, currently under construction at Fincantieri.
MSC Grandiosa is due to be named in Hamburg on Nov. 9.
MSC Group Chairman Gianluigi Aponte attended the delivery ceremony along with MSC Grandiosa Capt. Marco Massa and Alexa Aponte Vago, MSC Group financial officer, who snipped a ribbon to send a bottle of Champagne smashing against the hull.
Plus, Grandiosa steel-cutting and LNG-powered fuel cell stunner
Earlier in the morning, MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago presided at the steel-cutting for the first World Class ship, MSC Europa. It is the first LNG-powered cruise ship to be built in France and will feature a world-first LNG-powered fuel cell.
‘MSC Cruises has since its inception embraced a commitment to environmental stewardship and ways to minimize and continuously reduce our environmental footprint both at sea and ashore with the use of innovative, leading-edge and effective technologies across our entire fleet. With each new ship we raise the bar of environmental performance and our ultimate goal is zero-emission operations. MSC Grandiosa moves us another significant step forward in that genuine ambition.’
MSC Europa, the first of five LNG-powered ships, will ‘further elevate our standards in environmentally-sound cruising thanks to this use of alternative fuels, as well as other cutting-edge technologies,’ Vago added.
Laurent Castaing, general manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, called the delivery of MSC Grandiosa and the start of construction for MSC Europa 'two major milestones in the history of our partnership with MSC Cruises … We are happy and proud to provide our privileged customer with state-of-the-art solutions which significantly lessen the environmental impact of the ships.’
