Mercy Ships served thousands of people with little or no access to healthcare in the West African nations of Guinea and Senegal during 2019.

Care was provided by the all-volunteer crew of Africa Mercy.

1,819 free, life-changing surgeries

During 2019, Mercy Ships’ crew and partners provided 1,819 free, life-changing surgeries in Africa Mercy’s on-board operating rooms. These included orthopedic, maxillofacial and reconstructive plastic surgeries, as well as general, ophthalmic and women’s health surgeries.

Additionally, 1,227 local healthcare professionals received training in Mercy Ships’ medical capacity-building programs. Surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, healthcare workers/brace-makers and dental students received mentoring.

And 150 local medical professionals worked side by side with Africa Mercy’s medical teams in in-depth mentoring programs.

2020 biggest year yet

Russ Holmes, director of corporate development for Mercy Ships, expressed appreciation to the charity's supporters.

‘2020 will be the biggest year in our 41-year history,’ he added, ‘and we look forward to sharing more about why that is in the coming weeks.’
