Celebrity announces Flora godmother and Galápagos partnerships

Celebrity Flora
Celebrity Flora is scheduled to begin Galápagos service on June 30 from Baltra
A world-renowned conservationist will serve as the godmother for Celebrity Flora, the purpose-built Galápagos ship debuting this spring, and Celebrity Cruises announced new partners in sustainability and conservation.

'Each of these new partners are helping shape a better tomorrow for our planet in one way or another — whether it’s through the research, sustainable material sourcing or conservation — and we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this sea change,' Celebrity President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said.

She also credited 'the amazing' Francesca Bucci of BG Studio International in New York who designed Celebrity Flora's interiors and the world-renowned marine scientist and regional destination expert Ellen Prager, who crafted discovery-based programming exclusive to Celebrity Flora.

The godmother

Godmother Yolanda Kakabadse is former minister of environment for Ecuador and former president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and World Wildlife Fund International.

She is recognized as a prominent environmental leader and a global champion of sustainable development and biodiversity preservation. Celebrity will partner with Kakabadse on efforts to reduce food waste and to transform travelers into passionate advocates for conservation.

Oceanscope

Celebrity Flora will become the first Galápagos ship equipped with cutting-edge oceanographic research equipment known as Oceanscope. The program builds on a more than 20-year relationship with University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science that benefits from a cruise ship’s consistent itinerary to create a cost-effective way for scientists to gather and measure ocean circulation dynamics.

The system will track and map the region while measuring sea-surface temperatures and gathering data critical to research prediction of El Niño and La Niña. All findings gathered by Celebrity Flora will become open source data, globally accessible to researchers.

Design

Complementing the work of BG Studio, Ecuadorian native Adriana Hoyos, a renowned interior and furniture designer, created one-of-a kind pieces for Celebrity Flora's Discovery Lounge, Penthouse Suites and the Marina.

Celebrity Flora is due to begin service from Baltra on June 30.
