Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, was on hand with her management team at Saint-Nazaire for the steel-cutting for the second Edge-class ship, to be called Celebrity Apex.

Name changes for the ship and the yard

That 117,000gt ship, for spring 2020 delivery, had originally been announced as Celebrity Beyond.

There's a name change for the yard, too. As previously reported, STX France is now known by its historic name, Chantiers de l'Atlantique, at the request of the French state as Italy's Fincantieri takes control of the yard (France retains its 34.34% stake).

'Welcoming Celebrity Apex into our family with the leadership team was a very special moment, especially when we all signed the ship silhouette cut from the first piece of steel,' Lutoff-Perlo said.

She added: 'We are so grateful for our partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique and are thrilled to work on another very special ship together. The success and momentum for Celebrity Edge has been incredible, and with Celebrity Apex we will yet again show how we are taking our brand to the next level. We are offering our guests the best way to experience the world in modern luxury style.'

Another milestone in a great partnership

Laurent Castaing, general manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, expressed pride in the launch of 'another incredible Edge-class ship with Celebrity Cruises. The brand is known for many industry firsts so it’s fitting that Celebrity Apex is the first to participate in a steel-cutting ceremony under our new name Chantiers de l’Atlantique, another milestone of the great partnership we have built together.'

Celebrity Edge is nearing completion for hand-over in November. Following Celebrity Apex will be the third and fourth ships in the Edge series, scheduled for delivery in fall 2021 and fall 2022.

Going above and beyond

Edge 3 and 4 haven't been named, but a Celebrity spokesman told Seatrade Cruise News: 'You may not have heard the last of Celebrity Beyond.'
