First Global-class ship to homeport in Shanghai as part of Genting and Baoshan MoU

Madam Wang Hong, Party Secretary General of the Baoshan District Party Committee (Centre), Fan Shaojun, Deputy Party Secretary and Director of the Baoshan District (4th from right), and Su Ping, Member of the Baoshan District Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Baoshan District (3rd from right), met with Colin Au, Group President of Genting Hong Kong (4th from left) and Kent Zhu, President of Genting Cruise Lines (3rd from left) in Shanghai.

Dream Cruises’ first Global-class ship, under construction at MV Werften and arriving in early 2021, will initially homeport in Shanghai’s Wusongkou cruise port located in Baoshan.

The announcement is part of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Genting Kong Kong and the Baoshan District Government to further extend its cooperation in developing the cruise industry in China and in Shanghai.

‘Genting Cruise Lines through its roster of brands, Star Cruises, Dream Cruises and Crystal, has led the development of the cruise industry in Asia Pacific and China for the past 25 years. As the most popular cruise port in China, we value Shanghai as one of our strategic homeports and remain confident of the cruise market in the city,’ said Kent Zhu, president of Genting Cruise Lines.

Designed for the Asian market

‘To further support the cruise development in Shanghai, we are excited to deploy our upcoming Global-class ship to Shanghai in early 2021. Designed for the Asian market, the new ship will feature advanced technology, innovative itineraries and provide products to meet the needs of our Chinese guests – helping the Shanghai cruise industry reach new heights,’ he added.

The largest cruise ship built in Germany measuring 342mtr long and 46.40mtr wide the Global-class is 204,000gt and able to accommodate 5,000 passengers in 2,500 cabins based on a twin share basis – to meet peak season capacity needs in Asia – and feature a total life-saving capacity of up to 9,500 passengers.

Artificial intelligent and digital systems

The Global-class ships will feature facial and voice recognition for many services onboard to eliminate most queues; contextual marketing to even out demand on ship facilities; automated robots to perform everyday tasks – allowing the staff to focus on service delivery – along with other artificial intelligent and digital systems.

The first of two Global-class ships to be built at Genting-owned MV Werften will include a Cineplex, theme park, Asian spa, multiple authentic Asian dining experiences including fast-casual food outlets, and affordable shopping facilities in addition to luxury retail boutiques.

Pathfinder Explorer Dream in Shanghai

Paving the way for the new ship, Dream Cruises will deploy 1,870-passenger Explorer Dream in Shanghai from April 2019 on itineraries to Russia and Japan ports.

Genting Cruise Lines also plans to establish a cruise company in Shanghai’s Baoshan district as part of the MoU.
