A location some 112km from the south coast of Britain and 40km from the coast of France, the Channel Island of Guernsey is a popular location for cruise calls sailing to and from UK/French ports.
Mike Hopkins, director of marketing & tourism at VisitGuernsey welcomed CruiseBritain representatives explaining how Guernsey has a huge reliance on the sea, ‘keeping the island alive and vibrant’.
Cruise tourism plays an important part in Guernsey which is set to welcome 138 calls in 2019 by 31 ships.
Cruise visitors represent 100,000 out of 400,000 overall tourists visiting the island each year, explained Wendy Pedder CruiseGuernsey marketing manager.
Anchorage points close to island
St Peter Port is capable of handling at least two large cruise ships at any one time with ships anchoring close to the island.
Passengers disembark at a dedicated cruise pontoon 600mtr from the town centre. During a short tender transfer from the ships into St Peter Port harbour (5–10 minutes) visitors get a good panoramic view, which includes Guernsey’s sister Islands of Herm and Sark.
On a clear day passengers may also see Alderney to the north and south to Jersey.
The pocket sized capital of Guernsey St Peter Port is a vibrant mix of hustle and bustle with a distinctly continental atmosphere. Over 50 CruiseBritain members got to experience many of Guernsey’s attractions and sights including, historic buildings, museums, 480km of country lanes, beaches and a boat trip to Herm Island passing the anchor stops.
