MSC Lirica houses 2,000 athletes for Naples Universiade

As the 30th Summer Universiade, an international multi-sport event for university students, opens today in Naples, MSC Lirica is hosting more than 2,000 athletes on board. They come from 71 countries.

Costa Victoria is also providing housing for the event.

MSC country manager is past Universiade winner 

MSC Cruises' Leonardo Massa, country manager for Italy, former Universiade winner and Olympic competitor, will be joined by other members of the line's senior management to welcome athletes during the Universiade.

MSC Lirica will serve as a floating hotel in Naples for the next 15 days. Many of the ship’s services will be open to the students, including a wide range of entertainment activities, the spa, a large fitness area enhanced with Technogym equipment for competitive training, three restaurants and eight refreshment points. An ice-making plant has been made available to athletes and medical personnel. In the evenings, entertainment will be provided in the theater. Several parties and disco nights are being organised.

The Universiade Opening Ceremony was scheduled to take place Wednesday evening at Naples' Stadio San Paolo, home to the SSC Napoli football team.

Naples a staple on MSC itineraries

Naples regularly features in MSC Cruises’ Western Mediterranean itineraries. In 2019, its ships will make 67 visits, carrying a total of 340,000 passengers.

The line's commercial structure for Italy is also based in Naples.

MSC Lirica will resume its regular summer Eastern Mediterranean cruises from Venice July 26, calling at Bari, Santorini, Crete, Cephalonia (and Split.
