Silver Explorer Alaska sailing interrupted by fishing net

What was scheduled as a 17-day expedition voyage embarked in Otaru, Japan, on June 14, and traveled through Russia's Sakhalin and Kuril Islands. The ship was headed to Atka in the Aleutian Islands on Tuesday. It had been due to reach Seward July 1.

July 1 sailing canceled

The July 1 11-day sailing from Seward to Vancouver, BC, is also canceled. Silver Explorer will be going into drydock to check there's no damage since the net put significant stress on the ship's propellers.

Full refunds and future cruise credit

Silversea is giving a full refund and a future cruise credit for the abbreviated sailing. A Silversea spokeswoman said many guests have asked to apply the refund to a future cruise. A refund and credit also apply to the canceled July 1 cruise.

The 144-passenger Silver Explorer is part of the Silversea Expeditions fleet. It was extensively overhauled and updated at Seaspan's Vancouver Drydock last September-October.

Silver Explorer is scheduled to operate Silversea's first Northeast Passage voyage in August.
