Nidec ASI, part of the energy & infrastructure division of the Nidec Group, will be responsible for the two turnkey projects agreed with the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority. The company has 40 years’ experience building conversion systems and has previously developed applications for the Port of Genoa's flagship container terminal, Genoa Prà, Livorno port, the Muggiano Shipyards in La Spezia, Valletta port in Malta and Port de Séte in Southern France.
Dominique Llonch, CEO, Nidec ASI said the two initiatives due to be completed in two to three years 'represent a fundamental step in the process aimed at reducing the environmental impact of port activities, a central theme for promoting a sustainable development model in Italy and in Europe.’
Llonch anticipates the plans ‘will kick off many other similar projects for Italian ports.’
Nidec ASI leads the temporary joint venture to complete the works at the Port of Genoa as part of an €18m contract; Ceisis, a leader in the design, construction and management of port facilities, and the Molfino & Longo civil engineering firm are consortium partners.
With plans agreed in June, design work is already underway. The project will include Nidec ASI establishing six berths fitted with shore power. In order to adapt the voltage and frequency of the power supply network to ship requirements, a conversion system consisting of distribution panels, transformers and converters that will allow the ships to be powered simultaneously will be introduced. An automation, monitoring and control system will ensure all safety regulations are met at both Genoa and Savona ports.
Nidec previously led the implementation of shore power in the Ligurian capital four years ago at Genoa Prà.
The €8m contract for the project in Savona again involves Ceisis, together with Giuggia Costruzioni, SV Port Company and Fenoglio E Persico Engineering Firm.
A cold ironing system similar to the one being installed at Genoa will be developed for the cruise port, with a converter allowing one ship to be powered at a time.
The contract was signed in September.
€789m to modernise both ports
The planned investments for modernising the ports of Genoa and Savona – each a MedCruise member port – are co-financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) for projects equal to €789m, with approximately €300m covered by the EIB loan.
As well as shore power, plans include moving the breakwater at Genoa port, works on access to the railway terminals, restructuring port moorings and IT security.
