The election took place at the Institute’s recent annual meeting in Manila.
Promoting professionalism, best practice and safety
Bailey will represent the interests of members of this nongovernmental organization, which has consultative status at the International Maritime Organization, by promoting professionalism, best practice and safety throughout the sector.
As a seagoing and serving master, Bailey is well-placed to highlight the challenges of leadership and command in a contemporary maritime environment and to share his experiences of working with multinational, multi-disciplinary crews.
Developing tomorrow's leaders
As the industry's needs evolve and change, Bailey brings perspective on the skills required for the next generation of ship technology and fuels. He also will continue working with younger cadets to help develop tomorrow's leaders.
Bailey called it an honor to helm The Nautical Institute, where he is a longtime member.
'I have always appreciated the benefits of membership in terms of career development and the way the Institute has promoted safety and the fostering of young talent,' he said. 'I am looking forward to sharing my experience with maritime’s future leaders so we can continue to develop our vibrant industry.'
Bailey serves as a captain at Windstar Cruises and is MD of Seatag Safety Systems. Prior positions were at Stena Line and Hebridean Island Cruises, among others.
Appreciation for André LeGoubin
Nautical Insitute CEO John Lloyd thanked LeGoubin for his 'passion and commitment over the past two years' and extended a 'heartfelt welcome' to Bailey.
LeGoubin expressed his satisfaction at the opportunity to meet and engage with cadets around the world, attending webinars, visiting maritime training establishments and learning about the challenges faced by young seafarers 'so that we can take positive action to improve their lives. What an honor and a privilege to have been president during the 50th anniversary of The Nautical Institute,' he said.
